What are the Different Uses of Artificial Grass?
Pet-Friendly Turf: Artificial grass for dogs features a soft pile that is comfortable for precious paws. Our pet-friendly turf resists staining and damage from digging.
Landscape Turf: To better resemble the look and feel of real grass, these rolls resemble a variety of grass species. Some even contain brown thatch for a more realistic look.
Gym Turf: Gym turf is made with a short pile that’s ideal for sled pulls. It’s incredibly durable and can withstand the challenges of commercial gyms.
Sports and Field Turf: Designed with sports in mind, field turf is developed to reduce injuries while providing a smooth playing surface with optimal traction.
Playground Turf: Get turf dense enough to handle a high level of traffic. To truly make our artificial grass playground safe, you will want to add a foam pad underneath the turf.
Putting Green Turf: You’ll need a short, dense pile that allows a golf ball to roll true. No bad lies on this putting green!
Can artificial turf be installed over existing grass?
While it is possible to install artificial turf over existing grass, we recommend proper preparation for the best results. This often involves removing the existing grass and preparing a stable base to ensure a smooth and durable surface.
Our experts at Artificial Turf Direct can guide you through the installation process to achieve optimal results.
Does artificial turf require irrigation?
No, artificial turf does not need irrigation. This makes it a water-efficient choice, helping conserve resources and eliminating the need for regular watering. This feature is particularly beneficial in areas with water restrictions or frequent drought conditions.
How does artificial turf compare to natural grass in terms of environmental impact?
Artificial turf offers environmental benefits such as reducing water usage and eliminating the need for fertilisers and pesticides. At Artificial Turf Direct, we offer products made from recycled materials to further minimise environmental impact. However, it’s important to consider that artificial turf is made from synthetic materials and may require special disposal methods.
What else do I need for my DIY Artificial Turf Installation?
Cracker Dust
Cracker dust, also known as crusher dust or blue metal dust, is available from select landscape suppliers in Perth. It’s important to apply a layer of compacted cracker dust over a sand base when installing artificial grass. This layer prevents your grass from shifting and creating bumps, and it provides a solid foundation for securing turf pegs.
Turf Pegs/Pins/Nails
U-shaped turf pegs are used to anchor the edges of artificial grass, preventing them from getting damaged or creating tripping hazards. These pegs should be hammered in around the perimeter and along seams, as well as at various points across the grass to ensure stability.
Joining Tape
Self-adhesive joining tape is used to connect two sections of artificial grass. Since the rolls of artificial grass come in standard widths, you may need to join multiple pieces to fit your area. The joining tape, which is 150mm wide, is applied along the seams to ensure a secure bond.
Artificial Grass Infill Silica Sand
Infill dried Silica sand is applied on top of installed artificial grass. This sand helps keep the grass blades upright, protects the backing from sun damage, and keeps the surface cooler in hot weather. It also weighs down the grass to keep it in place. Infill sand is available in 25kg bags.
Additional Considerations
Before laying artificial grass, ensure that garden edging or borders are in place to contain the cracker dust. Assess your area to ensure proper containment and management of all materials.
What are the benefits of infilling with silica sand?
Helps maintain the pile structure.
Protects the anchor point of the grass.
Turning and twisting on the grass is helped by the sand taking up the pressure of the foot weight & movement on the grass.
Extreme heat in the summer helps absorb the temperature.
When placing heavy Items on top of the grass the sand will help take up that added load protecting the grass fibres. e.g. Swimming Pools, Large Garden structures.
This will help weigh down the grass and keep the surface even and crease free when using with fixings u shaped pins.
A minimum of 5kg silica sand per M2 should be used, on areas which will have very heavy footfall you can increase the sand application.
With sand application a simple stiff brush against the pile when applying the sand.
Regular brushing with plastic rake and brush will help maintain the look of your grass and remove any particles that have landed into the surface.
